FARM TO FOOD ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS
We know that if you’re on a tight budget it can be hard to get the delicious fruits, veggies, dairy, and meats that our farms produce for the community. There are a couple of programs in our region that are specifically looking to work with folks to help them access farm fresh food. If you struggle to afford your groceries, these programs below are for you!
CT NOFA’s Farm Share Program
This program reduces the cost of a local CSA (community supported agriculture) share for individuals in need of financial assistance and pays farmers the remaining balance. Reach out directly to the farms below to ask about this program, see if they have space, and if you can participate, and learn more at ctnofa.org
KD Crop Farm, Chaplin
Radical Roots Farm, Canterbury
Windham
Community Fridge at Whitewater Park
A public space where ANYONE may donate or take food for personal use. During the season, volunteers put gleaned food from farms in the fridge! Learn more at windhamfood.org
Windham Community Food Networks Community Table or Mesa Comunitaria
A pantry service that delivers weekly boxes of food to over 35 families in need. These boxes are filled with food locally sourced (through LFPA), gleaned from local farmers, gardeners and pantries and supplemented with additional groceries. The boxes are packed/delivered by recipients and community members who are compensated for their time. Learn more at windhamfood.org
Mansfield
Mansfield Farms to Families Program is designed to help connect local farms with Mansfield residents. The goal is to increase access to local, fresh foods from area farms to food insecure households. This is accomplished through CSA shares and sourced monthly food boxes. Visit the Town of Mansfield website to fill out an application.
Sponsored CSA shares: approved households will receive a partially sponsored share with the remaining balance paid by the participant. (e.g. CSA share cost $500 - $300 sponsored share = $200 payed by the participant)
Food distributions: locally sourced, fresh produce and food products from area farms coordinated at least 5 times throughout the harvest season that consist of a variety of produce, milk and eggs. Learn more at mansfieldct.gov/humanservices
